There is also value to taking a long-term, principle-based educational perspective.
There are Tensions today between the notions of Freedom and Boundaries
“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
We’ll return Goethe’s pithy pensée later.
Words, and laws have meaning and value to the precise degree that they are accurate, just, clearly understood, and equally applied, without favoritism.
Government, people, and power in all human forms requires boundaries.
You may wish to be a bird, but you aren’t one. It may not be hip among some, but boundaries of identity – as determined by reality – are what defines something.
Troubling Trends
The study we reported below tells us that Millennials today are a more prone to support socialism than the free enterprise system.
Influencing the Socialists in Your Office, the Best Way Out of Poverty
If true, that means they don’t know history well, because socialism has always failed, while free enterprise has lifted millions out of poverty.
When one person seeks to take from another by force, threat, or deception what another has lawfully, honestly gained – then that wronged person, and that society, suffer.
Law alone can never limit bad behavior. It’s said that America has a million total laws on the books at the state, local, or the federal levels. Are we crime free as a result of all those regulations and laws? Clearly, not.
“Words are the new weapons. Satellites the new artillery.” – is a line from a James Bond, 007 movie, Tomorrow Never Dies. Elliot Carver is the archenemy of Bond in the tale. Carver is a media mogul who manipulates the news, and governments, through his considerable wealth to his advantage. Consider that bit of social commentary, 2 decades ahead of our time.
Then consider the top ten American corporations, and how several of them are using their wealth and power to manipulate news, information (internet/education), and governments to their advantage. Are they a threat to your freedom? Your business? Your fellow workers, home owners, and prospects?

Dodd-Frank
Dodd-Frank made by an unjust decree ‘illegal’ what previously was free speech. It did so in the form of the so-called MLO rule. The MLO rule muzzled sales people from discussing credit and credit terms. What a realtor or car dealer could do, a manufactured home pro no longer could? How was that fair or just?
Perhaps in hindsight, the MH industry’s lenders, retailers, and communities should have sued immediately. The MLO rule was a clear violation of free speech. I said as much in an MHI Financial Services Committee meeting, several years ago. The reply from the then chairman to me and the room? You are right, but we will pursue this current course of action first.
Years later, Preserving Access is still being pursued. And it was later learned that the MLO rule, which harmed everyone, including consumers could have been ended by agreement between the so-called nonprofits in a deal with the CFPB, in the exchange for MHI not to chasing the points and fees rule modification.
That’s another story, for another time. But the fact that lawsuits can change unjust laws, click the article linked below.

“What’s Wrong is that We Don’t Ask What’s Right.” – G.K. Chesterton.
However well intended, the foundational problems with Dodd-Frank or ObamaCare were that they violated constitutional principles. Neither massive program worked as promised. Isn’t that a lesson in itself? A giant takeaway for our industry, and the nation too?
Socialism and secular humanism have repeatedly failed. What big government program can you point to that is a roaring success? Where can you find a program that doesn’t have waste, fraud, abuse, or corruption?

We can’t make governments our gods. Those governments are made up of fallible people. Let God be our God, because humans or AI/robotic intelligence would screw it up every time.
Government isn’t necessarily evil, but it must be controlled. That’s what history teaches us. That’s why the founders, imperfect as they were, limited the scope and power of government.
That’s why the limits the founders wanted for government are every bit as important now, as then.
Our tax and regulatory systems today have become terribly corrupted. That corruption and waste have limited our opportunities, and freedom.
Democratic President John F. Kennedy supported tax cuts. So did Republican President Ronald Reagan. Both successfully worked to spur the economy, and create jobs. After an initial dip, more federal revenue came in. Its common sense. People respond to rewards. People and organizations also respond to punishments and penalties, often by dodging them.
America, over the course of more than a century, has slowly allowed the federal government to slip its constitutionally defined limits. Its happened slowly, over time. Like a pot of water, here the temperature is being slowly heated, it may not be noticeable at the moment. It is only through hindsight that we see the trends. We must be people of principle, willing to learn, work, struggle, and fight for what’s right day-by-day.
Much of that struggle is simply education.
