Change Mistakes

Yesterday in a conversation with Jenny Hodge, Vice President – National Communities Council (NCC) – Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), the discussion of change and its related pitfalls loomed large. During our conversation, Jenny emailed the item below, which is used with her permission:

Observations on

Common Errors in Change Efforts

•Allowing too much complacency

•Failing to create a sufficiently powerful guiding coalition

•Underestimating the power of vision

•Under-communicating the vision by a factor of 10 (or 100 or 1000)

•Permitting obstacles to block the new vision

•Failing to create short-term wins

•Declaring victory too soon

•Neglecting to anchor changes firmly in the culture

…from Leading Change by John Kotter.

In my pervious blog post on Leadership, we explored insights and quotes from great leaders and thinkers on that topic, which goes hand-in-hand with change.

One or my favorite examples of the importance of being a team player is in the movie, Top Gun. "Maverick" (played by Tom Cruise) learns the hard way that 'you never leave your wing man.'

Maverick was doing things differently – he was ready for and into change – but the movie showed how self-centered or ego driven change was dangerous.

Maverick was failing to create a coalition, in fact, he was in rebellion with leadership. It isn't until he learned the right balance – which includes items found in Kotter's change list above – that Maverick became the brilliant pilot and leader he was capable of being.

What will YOU do to advance positive change in 2013?

Beyond question, the top two best attended manufactured housing events in the country are Louisville and Tunica. This year both events feature a wide array of profit and business building seminars geared for Retailers, Communities, Developers and other industry owners, executives and pros.

You can't underestimate the value of first hand information in the Information Age!

Seeing dozens of new homes, talking face to face with suppliers or vendors, getting side by side comparisons and networking with peers are all a key parts of advancing in the 21st century. The ones who get it done, come to these events!

One Good Idea for Positive Change…

Just one good idea for positive change can make the difference between profit and loss for many companies. For those who are already profitable, the kind of solid information you find at Louisville and Tunica can move you to the next level of success.

Change the Industry's Image for Good

We all know that manufactured housing is often misunderstood and even looked down upon by those who don't understand our product. They don't know what YOU know, that factory home-building offers more home for less money.

Too many professionals outside of MH don't know that are homes are greener and offer energy and other savings.

Those conventional house Builders, Realtors, Lenders and Investors can learn what YOU do at the special pre-Louisville Show event, Introduction to Manufactured Homes Opportunities Day. Take five and send this link to one or more of your contacts that you have wanted to better understand our Industry. Seating is limited. Remember, the link above is for those NOT in MH today, but who need to "get it."

Along with leaders in the MMHF, Clayton Homes, CU Factory Built Lending, MHI, the NCC, 21st Mortgage and others, we are building a coalition that can help change our industry for the good.

Take Jenny's advice From Kotter. Don't be complacent! Don't miss the vision!

Be a part of the solutions and positives changes and tap the opportunities for 2013. Hope to see you at Louisville, MHProNews and MHC-MD will be at Booth 115. ##
