Baseball season is in full swing (pardon the pun). Even for non-baseball fans, there are expressions and lessons from baseball beneficial to anyone. For example, in baseball, when you are playing defense, you can’t score. The only time you can score a run is when your team is at bat.
A twenty-plus year Industry friend reminded me about business and baseball lessons in a recent phone call. He was talking about ‘going for the fence’ – for you non-baseball fans, it’s another expression for hitting a home run (scoring). A spectacular hit – going for the fence and making it – always charges the fans and raises the spirits of the team. That home run is also a way you can win a game!
Defense in any sport is critical. In a business or political sense, ‘defense’ can be important, too. Our manufactured housing industry cannot win games solely by playing defense. We have to be able to force outs, to turn a potential score against us into a new opportunity at bat to score runs and ‘go for the fence.’

Show season is about to reach its big finale this week. Manufactured Home Shows are a place you can go for the fence or learn to do so!
Some of you – or your team members – may have never attended a home show. Make one next week your first or next home show event.
How important are home shows to our Industry? Well, why don’t you ask the central Asian visitors who are booked to attend the show in Tulsa next week! From across the country, and around the world, people have an interest and need for factory built homes.
The 2011 Great Southwest Home Show in Tulsa OK and HOMExpo 2011 in York PA present two great opportunities to ‘shop ’til you drop’ with new factory-built homes, suppliers, lenders and vendors all at one location. Most Industry pros can attend free, which makes the seminars and workshops at these events a real no-brainer for business building and protection.
With good turnouts at Louisville and Tunica, we should see more of the same in Tulsa and York! See the latest in new homes designed for YOUR market and needs. Shop and compare vendors and suppliers, all under one roof. A note from MHAO’s Deanna Fields informed us today they are running HUNDREDS of pre-registrations ahead of the same time last year! No doubt Mary Gaiski and the PMHA’s show is running ahead from their last show, too.
You can get more useful, business information in a day or two at one of these events than it would take for weeks most any other way. Shows are business building investments.
MHI’s Congress is also next week. Counting the NCC meetings, you can have 3½ days of business education, fine speakers and presenters and access to suppliers and vendors.
These three events are the Big Finale to ‘show season’ this year. Don’t miss it!
If you are not already booked, take a few minutes now to check the schedule and pre-register or just sign in at the door, as appropriate for each venue.
At both Tulsa and Vegas, we will be presenting our Dominate Your Local Market seminar and the Engaging the Media panel discussion. These are opportunities for you and your associates to learn how to generate more favorable media coverage and also to ‘go for the fence’ by driving more new business to your business!
Playing defense is important. Let’s play more effectively. Then, let’s learn to score more runs for you and your business.
