Some eight centuries ago, a keen thinker observed to his associates that hoarded seed rots. That was a pithy way of saying, get to work, spread your seed, nurture it so it may yield its crop.
Is the hoarded seed of our manufactured housing industry rotting? If so, what are we doing about it?
When a patient has been struggling for good health, the first order of business is survival. But as health begins to returns, the wise patient starts to follow the medical advice that would bring long term health.
If you haven’t read Lance Inderman’s column – What Manufactured Housing Competes Against – in Industry Voices, this would be a very good time to do so.
As I read Lance’s column linked above, my thoughts turned to a presentation that HUD Code factory homebuilder Jeff Wick made at the Wisconsin Housing Alliance (WHA). Marty Lavin‘s talk and writings also came to mind.
When successful, independent professionals such as those noted are ringing an alarm – along with other leaders noted in my last post, What Light… – it is a good time to sit up and take notice.
Among the Olympic reminders is the fact that planned, disciplined effort that is coached and encouraged can yield tremendous results.
We couch potatoes don’t win Olympic events. In business, the same thing holds true. But unlike the Olympics, we don’t have to be a teen or twenty something in peak shape to win in business!
Building Bridges
Bridge building frees people on both sides of a river. We don’t think often about the engineers or workers who built a bridge we use. What we may think about – if the bridge is under repair – of the countless hours and savings that a bridge provides to people on both sides of the water.
There will always be critics, naysayers and those who want the benefits of the bridge without being willing to pay for it. But we must be engaged in the bridge building anyway.
Businesses and associations must be talking – building, bridging – solutions. It is fine to do planning and meetings, but in the military if you need a bridge pronto, you call the Corps of Engineers and they rapidly put up a temporary one until the long term fix can be implemented. My parents taught me as a kid that half a loaf was better than none, how about yours?
The point is that when enough Industry professionals:
-
Pick up the phone and call your Senators to support S. 3484 and Congressman to support HR 3849 (contact info on this post here).
-
Get your manufactured home community residents and MH home owner customers to do the same.
-
To do more business building through customer focused professionalism, best practices and engagement through efforts like MHLivingNews.com and MHProNews.com, we will see What Light through yonder window breaks.
Spread those seeds with your peers, team members, customers and the public at large. Here is what a gardener or farmer will tell you. Some seed will fail. Some will take root. Some – properly nurtured and cared for – will yield a rich harvest. But seed that goes unplanted will eventually just rot. Let’s all plant and nurture your seed.##
PS: Let’s close on some GOOD seed! We plan an article on the RV/MH Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies in the days ahead. It was a wonderful event, good food, folks, festivities and fun. I took some photos of the Museum, I’ll plan to share some of those too. Until then, enjoy this photo of the Class of 2012 Inductees! Hats off to all who are making the turn-around of the RV/MH Hall of Fame a reality! Hats off to the 2012 Class of Inductees!
