The Province in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada says the last of four seniors at Abbotsford’s Garden Village MHC, which once was home to 101 residents will be moving before the official closure of the community Jan. 15. While provincial law requires owners to give residents 12 months written notice plus 12 months free rent before eviction, Garden Village management went door-to-door 18 months in advance to tell occupants of the intention to close. In addition, the owner provided some with two years free rent plus $4,000 in moving expenses, and assisted them in finding new places to live. Garden Village is closing because its water system is 50 years old and replacing the plumbing would be too costly. As MHProNews has learned, although the property may be redeveloped, there are currently no plans on file with city hall.
