MHI held a conference call with 37 member state association executives and their staffs on Thursday, January 20. During the call, MHI staff discussed new Congressional membership of the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee. Discussed were MHI actions related to the review and reform of Dodd-Frank and SAFE Act issues impacting the industry. MHI says its goal is to have legislation on these issues introduced by March, prior to the Legislative Conference. Discussion also surrounded efforts related to GSE reform. Currently Congress awaits a report from the Department of Treasury, which is to present a plan for winding down the government conservatorship of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and propose an alternative for a housing finance system. MHI has a working GSE task force that will be closely following this issue, assisting MHI with review of the Treasury report, and identifying priorities for the industry.
