MHI Honors 75 Years of Service

February 3, 2011 – Arlington, VA – 2011 marks the 75th year of the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI’s) dedication and service to the manufactured and modular housing industries.

“Since 1936 MHI has proudly been a strong advocate for our industry and for millions of Americans in search of quality, affordable housing solutions,” said MHI Executive Vice President Thayer Long. “We are grateful for the industry pioneers who have shaped the industry and association, and the countless industry members and individuals who have supported MHI over the years.”

Since the creation of MHI, the manufactured housing industry has grown to be a driving force in the housing market. Since 1989, manufactured housing has accounted for over 20% of all new single family homes built, accounts for almost 100,000 U.S. jobs, and serves over 18 million Americans.

As Congress recognized in the “Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000,” manufactured homes must play an even greater role in providing quality affordable housing for current and future consumers looking to meet a variety of housing and lifestyle needs.

Factory-built homes have the benefits of being precision built inside a manufacturing plant, with a process that improves consistency and eliminates waste, and a design/build system that facilitates innovation and quality control. These characteristics allow manufacturers to produce high-quality housing much more quickly and affordably than homes that are built on-site.
