The Board of Directors of the Manufactured Housing Institute of South Carolina (MHISC) has developed a four-pronged approach to increasing sales of manufactured homes, according to Executive Director Mark Dillard. 1) Appraisals. Noting that appraisers are not always thorough in gathering comps for manufactured home sales, the association has been showing retailers how to get good comps into the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system by listing the best-selling homes on their sales lots. 2) Recruit lenders. The MHISC has been presenting seminars at credit union meetings, and setting up meetings with dealers and local credit unions to encourage them to back manufactured housing lending. 3) Promote energy efficiency. With federal grant money, the association has been running TV ads in larger markets, promoting the energy efficiency of manufactured housing while showing some very attractive homes. 4) Insurance. MHISC is working with the Department of Insurance to help reduce insurance costs for manufactured homeowners who live in coastal areas.
