The Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) criticized the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI), as we reported here June 16, for leaving a door open that might require sprinkler systems installed in manufactured housing. MHI says it has consistently opposed mandatory fire sprinkler systems in HUD Code homes, and has supported state manufactured housing associations in their efforts to remove sprinkler systems from state and local building codes. MHI says all states except Maryland and California have repealed residential fire sprinkler requirements. MHI says only that there should be a uniform standard used when a sprinkler system is installed at a home buyer’s request or that of a community where it is required. MHI says there is no reason to believe HUD would make sprinklers mandatory.
