MHI Rolls Out Test of Legislative Tracking System

MHI Rolls Out Test of Legislative Tracking System
During the MHI Summer Meeting in Indianapolis, MHI unveiled the test of a new system designed to assist states and member organizations identify and track the progress of state legislation and local ordinances.

“We contacted a third party provider, and had them run about a dozen basic word searches describing our industry and some of the issues we’re facing,” said MHI Chairman Nathan Smith. “I was shocked when they told us the search identified over 6,000 pieces of legislation for 2013.”

In response, MHI engaged Multi-State Associates of Arlington, Virginia, to track legislative activities impacting the industry in 15 states and 1829 local jurisdictions within those states. Multi-State is the leading organization in legislative tracking and represents many industries being impacted by legislation on the state and local level.

Fleetwood Homes Hosts Rep. Flores for a Tour at its Waco, Texas Facility

In February of this year, Karl Radde, president of Southern Comfort Homes in Bryan, Texas, visited U.S. Congressman Bill Flores (R-TX) during the MHI Legislative Conference and Winter Meeting and extended an invitation for him to tour a manufactured housing plant in his congressional district. On June 2nd Fleetwood Homes hosted Rep. Flores at its manufacturing facility in Waco, Texas on a tour led by plant/general manager Ray Parma. He was accompanied by Radde; DJ Pendleton, executive director of the Texas Manufactured Housing Association; Don McCann, manager of the Clayton Homes Waco manufacturing facility; Zach Sanders, sales manager for Fleetwood Waco; and Gay Westbrook, MHI vice president of political and public affairs. Rep. Flores asked detailed questions of Parma during the tour ranging from frame camber to shear wall design and how it impacts tie-downs. It was clear to all in attendance that Rep. Flores was genuinely interested in learning about the construction of manufactured homes and cared about the people who made them.Rep. Flores met with the group after the plant tour and discussed a wide range of issues including Dodd-Frank legislation and the resulting CFPB regulations, OSHA inspections, and health care for employees. Parma and McCann informed Rep. Flores that between the Fleetwood and Clayton facilities in Waco, over 750 constituents in his district are employed by the industry, and vendors which supply materials to those facilities create even more jobs. Rep. Flores is serving in his second term representing the 17th Congressional District of Texas and serves on the House Budget, Natural Resources and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.
