A New Jersey supplier of modular shipping containers that repurposes them to commercial applications, temporary modular houses and military uses has converted 16 containers for use as a five-story Air Traffic Control Tower fitted to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards. While this particular one is designated as a temporary tower for Van Nuys, California’s airport while it undergoes renovation, SEA BOX President Jim Brennan, Jr. envisions their usage as a more permanent fixture at other airports.

As a supplier of new and used shipping containers designed for many uses, this project was particularly unusual, says burlingtoncountytimes. “It has to follow every building code in the United States, so it’s good for earthquakes in California to hurricanes in Miami,” Brennan said, from the company headquarters in Cinnaminson, NJ. U. S. Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ), after going to the top of the tower, said, “I’m delighted to see a business in this part of New Jersey doing so well and providing a critical part of our (airport) infrastructure.”
