Modular Classrooms may Ease Overcrowding

modular schoolrooms OK Icon Construction PRWeb creditDue to over-and under-crowding in the Wake County (North Carolina) Public School System, board members discussed changing the academic calendar from a ten month calendar to a multi-track calendar, or install 21 modular classrooms to relieve overcrowding in the elementary and middle schools. Capacity in the different schools range from 65 percent to 112 percent, and several are already on the multi-track program which reduces overcrowding, but many parents are opposed to the nine weeks on three weeks off setup, in part because families with students in different schools would not have concurrent vacation schedules. While 17 new schools are scheduled to open within the next five years to address the problem, funding has not been determined, according to wral.com, and purchasing the 31 modular classrooms would cost $2 million plus infrastructure expenses. The county already is using ten modular classrooms. As MHProNews knows, many school systems are facing a similar dilemma of increasing enrollment and lack of funding to build new schools. The school board plans on making a decision by Sept. 16. ##
