Correctional News reports that Oldcastle Precast Modular has been awarded the precast cell contract for the new Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution Graterford East and West project. The new $365 million prison is one of the largest correctional projects in progress in the United States. Oldcastle was awarded the contract to design, engineer, manufacture and erect the 2,112 precast concrete cells and 68 bare shower modules for the main housing units. A unique feature of the precast cells will be a secure monolithically cast ceiling. The report says the project is part of a statewide initiative to add 9,000 beds to Pennsylvania’s overcrowded state prison system. Graterford will be Pennsylvania’s first LEED-certified prison and is tentatively expected to open in 2014.
