The Walterboro City Council in southern South Carolina had to amend a zoning ordinance in order to construct a modular detention facility where a portion of the old jail complex once stood. According to colletontoday.com, the zoning regulations in the Unified Development Ordinance allow a correctional facility to be built in an area zoned Industrial District, but the site of the proposed detention center is zoned for General Commercial District. The amended ordinance allows the facility construction to proceed without altering the zoning district, but specifies the change will not allow any other correctional facility to be constructed in an area zoned General Commercial District, as MHProNews has learned. ##
