In lieu of the drop in single-family modular home construction, modularhomecoach tells MHProNews a sizable gathering of factory owners and top management will meet for a Round Table in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania Dec. 3 to plan steps for reversing the downhill trend and improve public perception of modular homes. Modular homes used to have a five percent share of new single-family home construction, but that has dropped to 1.5 percent today.
One big recent motivator was Hurricane Sandy’s devastation of the eastern seaboard, which resulted in a flood of new customers buying modular homes along the coast, as MHProNews reported on several occasions, but in the coming 18 months, as the rebuild slows to a trickle, the industry will have to seek other customers.
While waiting for the next natural disaster to hit is not a business strategy, being prepared for it is. Statistics show for every five new modular home builders, 2-3 will build only one modular home, and 1-2 build a few modular homes before returning to site built. Put another way, only 20 percent of new modular home builders stay with the industry after 18 months.
Social media is a great way to promote your product for free, but the commentator says factories have been known to put up a facebook page or blog, but do not refresh it enough to keep people coming back to look.
Some factories are working more closely with their builders, from planning the home through to service after the home is placed.
Tom Hardiman of Modular Home Builder Association will be one of the hosts of the Round Table. ##
