In a letter to the city of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, B. C. Housing requested a second extension, this one for nine-months, to continue using the temporary housing shelter on Lougheed Highway, which would allow more time to prepare a more permanent modular housing facility, according to mapleridgenews.
The 40-bed temporary shelter was originally set to close March 31, 2016 after being open six months, taking in residents from the tent camp the city closed, MHProNews understands.. That has since been extended to June 30–there was public outcry when the province arranged to convert the Quality Inn into a shelter, stopping that project dead, leaving B. C. Housing to find another site.
Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read is curious to hear what her colleagues on the city council have to say, although Councillor Bob Masse has expressed frustration with B. C. Housing because their plans fall through. But he suggests, “We really need to look at it regionally and get the province to buy in.”
Although a location has yet to be chosen for the new modular facility that will house 40 people, it would be operated by RainCity Housing for three years. ##
