Stuff.CO.NZ in New Zealand reports that as many as 500 modular homes may be set up in Christchurch following the massive earthquake Feb. 22. The Department of Building and Housing said the homes would be fully functional with water and electricity, but available only to those whose homes were uninhabitable. As people move back into Christchurch this week from living with relatives and friends, the need is becoming more urgent. The housing would not be free, but the government or private insurers may help those who don’t have the resources to pay. The proposal calls for temporary “worker camps” that can house 900 on one site and another site for 250-300 families that would remain for up to 10 years.
