PrairieBizMag reports from Grand Forks, ND, not long after a Blue Ribbon Commission on Housing determined the city has a housing shortage, especially affordable housing, plans for new developments have been announced and a home-buyers assistance program has been created for the city. The commission determined the housing shortage was propelling prices out of reach for those of more modest means. The market is now correcting itself, as plans for the next few years include nearly 200 single-family homes, 90 townhomes and 1,300 apartments. On the city’s northside, a developer purchased property from the Grand Forks Housing Authority where utilities are already in the ground for a planned development of 71 modular homes, single-family and multifamily, to help meet the need for affordable housing. MHProNews has learned ten homes could be ready for occupancy within two months. Grand Forks borders Minnesota on the opposite side of the state from the booming oil fields in western ND.
