Futuristic housing on Mars, as envisioned by Foster and Partners, would involve parachuting three different types of semi-autonomous robots onto the planet to build a modular housing settlement before the astronauts arrive. As part of a 3D Printed Habitat Challenge, one robot would be pre-programmed for digging, one for melting and one for transporting.
As fastcodedesign tells MHProNews, organized by AmericaMakes and NASA, a series of dome-like connected structures will be made from Mars’ soil by the robots. The soil will be fused together using microwaves, creating a building material to serve as a shield, protecting the astronauts against radiation and extreme temperatures.
The modular dome homes will have private and communal spaces as well as virtual environments to break up the monotony of living indoors all the time. Others have designed fashionable spacesuits and zero gravity cookware. The remaining obstacle is how to get there. ##
