MHProNews last published a story on July 10, 2015, regarding the effort to site modular homes around Dublin, Ireland to ease homelessness of families who have been living in one-room motels for up to two years without cooking facilities.
By exhibiting six samples of modular housing, the Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) is hoping to garner support from the mayors of the four Dublin local regions to erect 200 of the modular homes around the city. The housing is made off-site and can be assembled, fully-plumbed, wired and decorated within one day, according to irishtimes.
In August, there were 1,275 homeless children among 607 families, up from 1,185 homeless children from 556 families in July.
Modular Homes Ireland is displaying a 600 square foot unit with two good-sized bedrooms, a full bath and fully-outfitted kitchen and lots of storage. It was assembled in two hours.
MOM Sevices Ltd. is offering a 860 square foot model with two larger bedrooms, and a large living/kitchen combination area that required five days to build and assembled in under a full day.
Cathal Morgan, director of the DRHE, said this type of housing was relatively new to Ireland, but was used elsewhere. “These examples of what can be done are absolutely excellent, not just in terms of quality but also the speed with which they can be assembled,” he said.
London architect Tom Teatum, a veteran of modular housing in the UK, said in many ways it is preferable to traditional on-site construction because geater quality control could be exercised over the building process.##
