Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly says the women’s jail in Springfield, Ohio was built to hold 12 women in 1983, but demand has grown 400 percent, now requiring housing for 50-60 a day, according to springfieldnewssun.com. Six modular cells were sited underneath the main building in 2002 during remodeling of the jail, five for inmates and the sixth has restrooms, showers and sinks, now used for women prisoners. MHProNews understands because of the layout, the inmates have to go outside to get to the restrooms, so during the harsh winter the women were kept in the main building. ##
