In a letter to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the National Association for Home Builders (NAHB) asks the Senate to support the Vitter/Warner/Nelson amendment to H.R. (House of Representatives) bill 4212 that strengthens the Contaminated Drywall Safety Act of 2012. In targeting the response to unsafe drywall, the amendment focuses the authority granted to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and ensures the Commission’s voluntary standard has the support of the business community. In a story MHProNews published Sept. 21, 2012, NAHB sent a letter to Speaker of the House Rep. John Boehner HR 4212 asking for the opportunity to comment on the legislation before it was passed. The measure is in response to Chinese drywall used in repairing many homes following Hurricane Katrina that sickened hundreds of residents, and resulted in millions of dollars of lawsuit settlements, particularly in Louisiana and Florida.
