“Should Americans celebrate Thanksgiving as a day of gratitude? Or should they mourn it as a day of guilt? Michael Medved, author of The American Miracle, shares the fascinating story of the first Thanksgiving,” is the teaser on the YouTube page for the Prager University video posted below, entitled “What’s the Truth About the First Thanksgiving?”
The timing for Thanksgiving 2020 in some ways couldn’t be much better than it is. After all, there is a national debate raging over America’s history, ‘socialism vs. capitalism,’ President Trump vs. former Obama-era VP Biden, and much more.
The next video merits a suggestion, namely that the term ‘capitalism’ should be replaced by ‘free enterprise.’ The terminology matters.
That said, this Prager U video entitled “America’s Socialist Origins” features history professor Larry Schweikart of the University of Dayton. He explores the question, “Was America once socialist? Surprisingly, yes. The early settlers who arrived at Plymouth and Jamestown in the early 1600s experimented with socialist communes.”
Ben Shapiro, who is serious about his Jewish faith, produced this video for Reality Check on the topic of “the true story of Thanksgiving – not the multiculturalism and socialism pushed by leftists every November.”
Of course, all of that could be ‘right wing propaganda,’ right? Well, not so much. This video by History is 9 years old, predating the drama of the past few years.
National Geographic’s 2017 video below frames the story as follows.
Books and scholarly articles are written on this subject, so a few short videos won’t do it justice. But the introduction above is sufficient to shed light on the origins of the holiday. It also should stand as a cautionary tale for those racing to embrace socialism.
Again, MHProNews notes that the term ‘capitalism’ is actually how Karl Marx framed the discussion. Far better to use the phrase ‘free enterprise.’ Also, such videos often point to giant corporations like Amazon, who’s founder Jeff Bezos is arguably a monopolist. Those points noted, and some hyperbole aside, this video by Prager has topped 10 million views.
“Decades after capitalism seemed to have triumphed over socialism, politicians are once again arguing about the merits and drawbacks of these opposing economic systems. Why are we still having this debate? Andy Puzder, former CEO of the parent company of Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr., explains the misconceptions that keep the debate alive.”
