New Bill Expands Access to Grant Money for Owners of Pre-1976 Homes

Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) introduced a bill (H.R. 1623) to reauthorize and improve the Assets for Independence (AFI) program. Assets for Independence (AFI) is a Federal program that provides grants to help low-income families out of poverty.

The bill allows this grant money to be used for home repair and replacement of substandard homes, including replacement of pre-1976 mobile homes. If passed, qualifying families could receive as much as $10,000 in down payment assistance to help close the gap between the cost of the new home and the homeowner’s income limitations.
