The New Zealand Herald tells MHProNews that New Zealand’s first prefab home factory opened this week, located in a former General Motors assembly plant. Matrix Homes expects to produce up to 500 homes each year.
“Some people are building components of houses, then assembling them on the site. However, at this plant, we’re producing fully finished houses with code compliance certificates,” Sean Murrie, Matrix Homes chief executive and director, explained.
Matrix houses come in an M1 module with a single bedroom and a larger M2 two-bedroom module and have a simple mono-pitch roof with a big square wall at one end. Both modules exist as standalone homes, or can be combined in a host of different configurations.
“Both modules can fit onto a truck or book a ticket on the Cook Strait Ferry,” Murrie said.
Costs of the modular homes are as follows: $89,000 – 51 sq m, one bedroom; $99,000 – 70 sq m, two bedrooms; $195,000 – 140 sq m, 4 bedroom, 2 bathrooms.
Murrie said that transportation costs in Wellington would be $10,000 and $20,000 in Auckland. Piles are included in the Wellington transport costs but not in the Auckland costs. Pile costs for Auckland are an extra $3000. ##
