Only one of the headline items are manufactured housing specific, and it is posted in the pull quote from Rachel Siegel with Pew research, below. She said: “Manufactured homes are an important source of housing, and more manufactured homes are part of the solution to America’s housing shortage.” That is arguably true, but it is also largely ignored. There are plenty of stories on manufactured housing that are more manufactured housing focused that could have been published, some have been in our pending status for days, but the future of America and thus the manufactured home industry and all other professions from 2025-2029 will be decided by the rapidly approaching 2024 general election. Just as JP Morgan Chase did a recent post for their customers on the upcoming election, MHProNews’ management believes elections and voters help drive regulations, taxes, policies and thus business outcomes. Let’s look briefly at the topics chosen before presenting them.

1) Google is arguably one of the most powerful corporate interests on the planet because information is potential power. Google’s parent company Alphabet has about a two trillion-dollar market cap and owns YouTube. Google has been reshaping the news industry for years and in various ways it shapes your business, our industry, our nation and others, plus influences elections. MHProNews has been doing articles that sounded the alarm about Google’s power since 2018. The Google article below thus matters.

2) In an election that will be decided by perhaps one to two percent of voters, what Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his running mate Nicole Shanahan do or say may make the difference between who is the next occupant of the White House. Even if Kennedy and Shanahan suddenly changed their minds, these remarks by Shanahan that follow below can’t easily be unsaid. Thus, the post below on Shanahan’s revealing remarks could be critical come Election Day November 5, 2024, or whatever day early or absentee voting occurs in your state or situation. Readers should keep in mind that Kennedy and Shanahan are both from long Democratic backgrounds.

3) Let’s mention that some 33 percent of people who could vote in the U.S. national elections don’t. When sometimes a handful of votes in a key swing state or district have made the difference in a close election, even if you haven’t voted for years or have never voted, please plan to do so. As a friend recently mentioned, that pro said ‘I do my homework’ before that person goes to vote. That person fills out a sample ballot in advance of going to the polling place. That individual then takes that sample ballot to the polls and can reference it while voting to get in and out with the precise way they thoughtfully planned to vote. An interesting idea.

4) Even if think your mind is already clear on the issues, many in your circle do not yet have their minds made up. Facts matter. This may be a meme election for some, one of soundbites and snapshots. But some will want to dig into the facts. Our site data tells us as much. We apparently dominate because we provide a level of detail that others in MHVille trade media can’t, don’t, or won’t for whatever reasons. Trust that we would not waste our time or yours doing longer articles if shorter ones could do exactly the same thing. Note, readers should keep in mind that since moving to Florida about a dozen years ago, the management of MHProNews have been political independents.  We have provided information sourced from the left, center, and right all these years for good reasons. While oversimplified, the points below by professor Chrysalis Wright, Ph.D., are quite astute.

5) Recall that leftist Noam Chomsky and his co-author Edward S. Herman have been saying for decades that the mainstream media is “manufacturing consent.”

6) While we don’t routinely agree with former President Barack Obama (D), and we would rephrase this, he too had an important point, illustrated in the quote below.

7) Obama was largely correct on that point. There has been a sort of alternative reality created that people can live in, and some opt to live in that alternative reality. Indeed, some arguably insist on not having their reality challenged.  But that is foolish. Reality is what is.  The Daniel Patrick Moynihan (NY-D) quote below is quite correct.

8) Without sufficient information, it is quite easy to make poor, bad, and costly decisions. That may be particularly true in manufactured housing. Why is Rachel Seigel with Pew, and an array of other research and researchers, routinely ignored? Sometimes, out of ignorance of their work. But also, it is due in part because people’s understanding of reality is skewed, and because the political and regulatory system in the U.S. has been manipulated in ways that tilt against the interests of our industry and affordable housing consumers. But the good news is that there are already laws on the books that could robustly benefit manufactured housing if they would be properly and routinely enforced.

So, not only is knowledge power, but pushing that knowledge out and creating centers of influence that will promote the enforcement of good existing laws is critical to the future of our industry.

Yes, the upcoming elections matter. If you are a conservative, understanding how the left and Democrats think matters. If you are a liberal or leftist of good will, a similar principle applies. Because when some 70 percent of the country routinely thinks that the ‘system is rigged’ and some 65 percent of the country thinks that the nation is on the wrong track, then it ought to be obvious that there is common ground between the left and right.

9) The mention of the ex-Republican (GOP) mayor’s remarks below may seem curious to some who are careful readers of MHProNews. While his characterization of the Republican Party as a “cult” is harsh and arguably hyperbole at best, nevertheless he is correct in saying that the leadership of the Republican Party today is quite different than it was when John McCain was that party’s nominee. MHProNews has made the observation several times that in 2015-2016, Donald J. Trump took on the “Republican Establishment” the “Bush-Wing” of the Republican Party, and beat them decisively.  While there are absolutely establishment Republicans still in evidence, their influence is waning while the “MAGA” or “America First” and “Americans First” views of that party continue to grow.

10) From former President Barack Obama’s, per ABC 11’s transcript of his speech last night, are these noble words.

That sense of mutual respect has to be part of our message. Our politics has become so polarized these days that all of us, across the political spectrum, seem so quick to assume the worst in others unless they agree with us on every single issue. We start thinking that the only way to win is to scold and shame and out yell the other side. And after a while, regular folks just tune out, or don’t bother to vote at all.

That is classic Obama, much like the remarks in the image quote above about Fox vs. NPR. It is true, but…and more on that further below.

Google Finally Gets Its Comeuppance

In a recent court order, federal district court Judge Amit Mehta said what most of us have suspected for years: Google’s market dominance in online searches isn’t a result of “happenstance,” but deliberate and intentional misconduct. 

As Mehta said in his Aug. 5 ruling: “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” in violation of the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act. 

That’s the same law that the greatest monopoly-busting president in American history, Teddy Roosevelt, used more than 100 years ago to break up the same type of corporate behemoths that were trying to control and dominate the U.S. economy.

Some of those targeted were single companies such as Google; others were “trusts” in which several companies conspired to combine their power to monopolize and control both prices and supply.

This may lead to Google being restricted in its market activities, or even the breakup of Google, just as the Ma Bell monopoly was broken up in 1982 when AT&T was the only telephone company in the country.

Or when Microsoft in 2001 finally settled an antitrust case against it, essentially for doing the same thing that Google has been doing—monopolizing the online search process—by bundling Microsoft’s web browser with Windows to make it harder for rival browsers to compete. That resulted in Microsoft’s search engine (remember Internet Explorer?) being the dominant web browser.

With Google, it’s about time.

This case has been a long time in the making. The Justice Department, along with 11 states, filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google in October 2020. Two months later, 38 states filed a similar lawsuit against Google, and it was consolidated with the first case. Trial didn’t start until three years later, lasted nine weeks, and involved dozens of witnesses and thousands of exhibits.

Mehta, in his ruling, explains something else that we all know: “The general search engine has revolutionized how we live.”

“Information that once took hours or days to acquire can now be found in an instant on the internet with the help of a general search engine,” the judge writes, adding: “And it all happens in the blink of an eye.”

Google makes its gargantuan profits by selling digital advertisements. As an example, Mehta notes, when you type the phrase “running shoes” into a general search engine, “sellers of running shoes will compete with one another in a split-second auction to place an advertisement on the results page, which if clicked takes the user directly to the seller’s website.” 

For “more than 15 years,” the judge writes, “one general search engine has stood above the rest: Google.” That dominance made it one of the “world’s most valuable companies,” he said, with a parent company, Alphabet Inc., that has a market capitalization “of more than $2 trillion.” 

In 2014, Google “booked nearly $47 billion in advertising revenue,” but by 2021, “that number had increased more than three-fold to over $146 billion,” Mehta wrote in his ruling.

Who was the closest competitor, with only 6% of the market? Microsoft’s Bing, which generated less than $12 billion in 2022.

By 2020, Mehta wrote, Google had “nearly 90% [of the market], and even higher on mobile devices at almost 95%.” 

But how did Google become the dominant search engine?  It did it the same way Microsoft did when it made its Internet Explorer the default web browser for all Microsoft products. 

Mehta said in his opinion that Google for years “secured default placements [for its search engine] through distribution agreements” with big payments to “browser developers, mobile device manufacturers, and wireless carriers” that amounted to $26 billion in 2021 alone. 

These entities all “agree to install Google as the search engine that is delivered to the user right out of the box at key search access points,” the judge wrote, and they are restricted by the agreements from preloading “any other general search engine on the device.”

This means more users of Google, more advertisers for Google, and “more advertisers means more revenue.”

The Justice Department and the states alleged that Google “unlawfully used the distribution agreements to thwart competition and maintain its monopoly in the market for general search services and in various online advertising markets.”

Mehta agreed, concluding that Google has monopoly power through its distribution agreements that “are exclusive and have anticompetitive effects.” Google provided no “valid procompetitive justification for those agreements,” the judge concluded.

Most “importantly,” he wrote, “Google has exercised its monopoly power by charging supracompetitive prices for general search text ads,” allowing it “to earn monopoly profits.” 

By “supracompetitive,” Mehta means that Google has charged prices for advertising above what it could charge in a competitive marketplace. Just like Ma Bell could charge American consumers essentially whatever price it wanted when it was the only provider of telephone service.

I am old enough to remember how the price of telephone services, particularly long-distance rates, fell dramatically when the market was opened up to competition and new companies sprang up, including Sprint and MCI.

Mehta decided: “Google has violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act by maintaining its monopoly in two product markets in the United States—general search services and general text advertising—through its exclusive distribution agreements.” 

Mehta noted that “merely possessing monopoly power is not itself an antitrust violation.” But the judge also found what he called the “essential” element in an antitrust violation: “barriers to entry” by others into the marketplace.

Mehta concluded that “these barriers exist,” including Google’s “control of key distribution channels.” These “are significant barriers that protect Google’s market dominance,” the judge found, and allowed the company to maintain its monopoly through the exclusive distribution agreements.

We don’t know yet what remedy Mehta will order to end Google’s monopoly, since that wasn’t part of his Aug. 5 order.

But there seems little doubt that the dissolution of Google’s monopoly—either through a banning of its exclusive distribution agreements or an actual breakup of the company itself—will result in the same surge of competition seen in other industries after an antitrust victory.

A competitive market will lower advertising prices across the board and make it easier for consumers to choose the search engine they want when they buy a new computer or mobile phone.

Of course, increased competition could have another positive impact: ending Google’s biased, left-wing stranglehold on the flow of information. As my Heritage Foundation colleague Daniel Cochrane and I have pointed out, “companies like Google use secret blacklists to suppress targeted websites and communications.” Those targets, Google believes, present politically incorrect views, articles, and opinions. 

What’s more, we wrote, platforms such as Google “use proactive methods to push users toward content or actions that further Big Tech’s political agenda.” And politically biased “search algorithms, ‘suggested search’ features, [and] AI chat bots” all have “a significant cumulative effect on user attitudes.”

When Teddy Roosevelt ran for office in 1904, he promised Americans a “Square Deal,” one in which, among other things, he would wage a trust-busting war against the big monopolies and combines of his time.

It is about time that Americans got another “Square Deal” when it comes to the huge social media platforms that are controlling so much of our economy and information through anticompetitive misbehavior, raising our prices, and censoring and manipulating the marketplace of ideas.

Breaking up Google’s monopolist stranglehold is just a start. ##

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is seriously considering quitting the 2024 race and endorsing former President Donald Trump, according to RFK’s running mate Nicole Shanahan.

“There’s two options that we’re looking at and one is staying in, forming that new party, but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump, or we draw somehow more votes from Trump,” Shanahan said on the “Impact Theory” podcast.

“Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump and you know, we walk away from that and explain to our base why we’re making this decision,” she told interviewer Tom Bilyeu.

Meanwhile, Bilyeu asked Shanahan if she would run for governor of California if she and Kennedy drop out of the White House hunt, and she responded, “I would consider running as well.”

2) No question, Obama is a better orator than Biden or Harris. Obama can rouse an audience. But much of what he says is demonstrably half-truths, misleading, deception and misdirection.  Obama’s Democratic replacement in the 2015-2016 election cycle, his Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lost to Trump. If not for election interference, and purported illegalities, there are those who argue that Biden lost to Trump in 2020. Even if every vote was legitimate, which is disputed, Biden’s victory was predicated on information that big tech backers suppressed. While the research below indicates that most Biden voters would not have changed their vote had they known the truth about Hunter Biden and related influence peddling scandals, 17 percent of Biden voters would not have voted for him had they known the truth. MRC claims that there are 41 cases of Google interfering in U.S. elections. Democrat Dr. Robert Epstein has similarly proclaimed years of research evidence that indicates that Google has abused its power to improperly influence elections. But it isn’t just Google, its Facebook too, and they routinely put the thumb on the scales in favor of Democrats. This occurred while Obama-Biden were in office. So, there is an evidence-based case to be made that Obama blustering on about ‘democracy’ is apparently hypocritical posturing.

3) Long before Robert F. Kennedy Jr. became a candidate for president, MHProNews provided some insights from the controversial environmental attorney and children’s health advocate. Before Kennedy ripped some of the billionaire-insiders, like Buffett ally William “Bill” Gates III, MHProNews had been exposing some of those same things. Kennedy is a lifelong Democrat who jumped his party because he said the primary was rigged to favor Biden. Now, when Biden apparently lost the debate against deposed President Donald Trump, Democratic insiders dumped him and then gave him a late farewell on Monday night, normally the weakest ratings night of a convention.  What some of the lessons of Kennedy demonstrates is that the nexus between big donors, big business, big media, big tech and big government that he rails against are willing to squash a leftist as much as a conversative. Kennedy was supposedly one of the most censored people during the Covid19 big tech censorship regime. Both Kennedy and Trump were censored, as have been several of their mutual backers. MHProNews has said that editorially we are Elon Musk skeptics. But give the man his due. He has obviously made X (formerly Twitter) more free speech friendly than it was under Jack Dorsey’s leadership.

4) You can’t have a truly free society without freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religious belief.  That is why the founders of America protected those rights in the First Amendment. There is a case to be made that the Second Amendment is the logical backup to the first. If government becomes oppressive, the Second Amendment gives citizens the ability to resist oppressive government, just as the colonists resisted England, its crown, and its often-monopolistic 18th century business class.

5) Let’s be clear. There are no perfect candidates running for office this election cycle. Deposed President Trump has his weaknesses and flaws. But the 2024 election will come down to a choice between one of several minor candidates, which all tend to lean left, including Kennedy-Shanahan. Democrat-allied efforts forced costs on the Kennedy-Shanahan campaign, such as increased security costs, because the Biden-Harris Administration failed to provide him with Secret Service protection until after the Trump assassination attempt. Then, Democratic allied efforts, said Kennedy-Shanahan, fought their ballot access efforts. Kennedy has said that for the most part, left-leaning (meaning, pro-Biden-Harris) media would not give him airtime. It is no surprise that he might, based on those claims and factual elements, throw his support to Trump instead of Democrats.

But Kennedy-Shanahan example also reveals that the modern Democratic leadership is NOT a believer in democracy. They have installed Harris-Walz, even though Joe Biden won his party’s nomination. When a campaign isn’t going the way they want it to, they are willing to bend or even break the rules. So, what Obama accused Trump of doing is precisely what they appear to be repeatedly guilty of doing themselves. To be clear, this isn’t an indictment of all Democrats, it is rather an indictment of the leadership of that party which Kennedy aptly claimed is working in collusion with big tech, big media, billionaires, big pharma, etc. It was a bad joke, for example, for Biden to point to a supposed ‘victory’ over big pharma, when the Biden-Harris administration pumped billions of dollars into big pharma with his COVID19 ‘mandates.’  When someone understands the bigger picture, the scope of some of the lies, half-truths, and deceptions are breathtaking.

6) Based on self-interest, most Americans, if given the ‘full truth’ on the various candidates, their records, and campaigns would vote against Harris-Walz and would vote for Trump-Vance. The only way that Harris-Walz might win is if reality is distorted in the minds of enough traditional Democratic backers, left-leaning independents and those taught to hate Trump in an Orwellian “Two Minutes of Hate” fashion. Democratic prosecutors have attempted to imprison Trump, and that still might happen in September when a Democratic judge, who has a Democratic bundler for a daughter will sentence Trump on an arguably tortured NDA related case. It is third-world, or historically Communist style politics on display in the U.S.

7) Let’s look at a specific point made by Obama on behalf of Harris-Walz last night. The following is a reference to the Harris announced housing plan, see that linked here.

And Kamala understands this. She knows, for example, that if we want to make it easier for more young people to buy a home, we need to build more units, and clear away some of the outdated laws and regulations that have made it harder to build homes for working people in this country. And she’s put out a bold new plan to do just that.

But that is demonstrably not true. MHProNews has repeatedly pointed out that Democrats have been in Oval Office for most of the past 12 of the recent 16 years. Democrats aptly told Bush-era HUD Secretary Mel Martinez They should well know about what Biden-Harris appointee Sec. Marcia Fudge said about overcoming zoning and placement barriers for HUD Code manufactured homes. They could overcome the very barriers and regulations that they say that Harris’ “bold new plan” will overcome. The housing plan, if properly understood, is a bold and brazen ruse, a fraud, the latest bait and switch or shell game.

7) MHProNews has exposed corruption on the part of the Bush-family as well as others from both major parties. This isn’t about partisanship. It is about facts, evidence, and apparent reality.

8) Some Democrats and leftists are among those who have said what is occurring. The deep pocketed corporate interests have largely embraced the Democratic party in the 21st century. Democratic backers have been found guilty of serious crimes.

9) Deposed Republican Rep. George Santos (NY) pled guilty recently.  Meaning, this post isn’t a case of corruption existing in just in one political party. But there is an evidence-based argument to be made that big money, big business, big media, big tech, has generally favored the left in the U.S. for decades. That is becoming more evident.  What was once scoffed at as a conspiracy theory has become more difficult to ignore.

10) Some of us are sons and daughters of legal immigrants or are who came to this country seeking to escape the very sorts of political corruption that has reared its ugly head in the U.S. If the game becomes even more rigged than it already is, it may not be possible to save America by ballots alone.  This election will either solidify the power of the leftists and their big business allies or it will start the process of breaking their chokehold on our society.

RFK Jr’s uncle and father were gunned down too. They wanted to challenge the military industrial spy complex.

11) What is the importance of the evidence of Jesus to the election? Plenty. The left routinely hates religious belief, even if they posture differently at times.  Traditional Christian beliefs, traditional Jewish beliefs are contradicted by much of the Democratic platform. Moderate Muslims have not interested in the kind of pro-terrorist radicalism being displayed on the street protests outside of the DNC convention.  The Obama quote below is another example of paltering, but it is one of several possible examples of hypocrisy from the left.

13) Update 8.22.2024: the YouTube video below which define Orwellian doublespeak and doublethink are arguably useful prisms with which to look at the Democratic Party today as well as the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). There are some things that are obvious self-contradictory at MHI and in the Democratic Party. It is useful to recall that author George Orwell has been described as a disillusioned socialist in pondering doublespeak and doublethink. Orwell’s 1984, paints a fictional picture of a world at war. There are three superpowers, and they are engaged in endless conflict that involves shifting alliances. History that contradicts or is inconvenient to the party line is memory holed, somewhat like inconvenient people – including an MHI award winner – and notions have vanished or are missing from the MHI website.  For Democrats, Senator Bernie Sanders (VT-DS) railed against billionaires, even though Gov. J.B. Pritsker (IL-D) took the stage and bragged that he was a billionaire. You can’t make this stuff up. It is doublethink and doublespeak in action.

The video below uses some arguably imperfect examples of doublespeak, but it features explanations of the terms by William Lutz that are useful, and which are mixed in with clips from an older movie version of Orwell’s 1984 that are useful.
