Following a story MHProNews.com last posted Sept. 5, 2013 regarding a rejected proposal to use modular jail cells in Dutchess County, New York instead of paying other counties to house the overflow of prisoners, the state legislature voted $6.49 million to purchase and install modular “pods” as a temporary fix in a lead up to long-term jail expansion. Last month the county had 430 people in custody, but with room at the jail in Poughkeepsie for only 249, the remainder had to be farmed out to other county jails. According to poughkeepsiejournal.com, County Executive Marc Molinaro says the modular units will save the county $1 million each year. The units will be installed early next year by Proteus On-Demand Services of Austell, Georgia. ##
