A $660,800 grant from the New York State Division of Homes & Community Renewal (NYSHCR) will be used to replace dilapidated owner-occupied pre-HUD Code homes with energy-efficient manufactured homes in Otsego County, as reports thedailystar. Karen Sullivan, Otsego County Planning & Solid Waste Director, says over the next two years the program will assist 7-10 low income households, targeting the most urgent housing conditions.
“Our mandate is to serve those households with the greatest need,” Sullivan stated, “particularly those mobile homes exhibiting overcrowding, structural failures, chronic heating or plumbing inadequacies, and dangerous conditions for children, the elderly, and residents with disabilities. Pre-1978 mobile homes are of special concern because they may contain lead-based paint.”
Applicants must meet income eligibility and credit requirements, own their own homes–which must be their year-round permanent residence–and be up to date on property and school taxes.
As MHProNews reported Jan. 5, 2014, this is the second year Otsego Rural Housing Alliance (ORHA) collaborated with the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to focus on deteriorated MH. During the course of the past year, $324,000 has been spent by virtue of the same program to rehabilitate 20 older homes in need of repair. ##.
