Sweden is swarming with refugees, creating a housing crisis which the government wants to address with modular homes, which is setting off swarms of criticism from the left and the right. According to sputniknews, the opposition states the homes will have outlived their usefulness after 10-15 years and will be demolished, and that is wasteful.
Andreas Brendinger of Sweden’s Building Federation calls the modulars temporary with sky-high monthly rents. Another critic expressed fear and insecurity for their neighborhood, as dissatisfied residents feel they are being steamrollered by municipal officials. Two members of the Swedish Democrats Party, Maggi Haglund and Madeleine Nilsson, say, “People are desperate, angry, frightened and above all they feel totally powerless.”
163,000 asylum-seekers arrived in Sweden in 2015, up from 81,000 the previous year, a significant amount for a country with less than ten million people, as MHProNews has leraned.. And this year the Migration Board says they are expecting another 70,000 to 140,000, producing a severe housing crisis.
The Swedish government states it will build 250,000 homes by 2020, but public housing organization SABO says the need is for 425,000 homes. ##
