Following up on a story we ran in the Daily Business News Oct. 14 regarding the repeal of rent control in a Capitola, CA MHC, Robert S. Coldren, of Hart, King and Coldren of Santa Ana, CA tells MHProNews.com the city’s decision is a victory for good government and property rights. It also provides relief for the Reed family, the owners of the Surf and Sand Mobile Home Park, who have had to struggle under the weight of rent control for so many years. Coldren says some of the residents thought it was their right to rent a homesite on the coastline for under $300 a month. Ron Reed, who helped build Surf and Sand long before rent control, responded to the news of the repeal: “This has been extremely hard on the Reed family for the past 30 years. When we bought the property we didn’t ask for rent control. I feel like the Reed family finally got their good name back. We were made to look like villains in the media, even though we treated our tenants very well…..I hope it paves the way for other park owners in the same dilemma.” Attorney Coldren adds that private “property should not be confiscated in the name of affordable housing.” He also notes that politicians earn votes from supporting rent control.
