The Huntington Beach (California) City Council voted 4-3 to bring the issue of rent control for residents of the city’s manufactured housing communities (MHCs) to a ballot measure for voters. MHC residents have complained recently that rents have risen as much as 50 percent in the last six months, according to ocregister.com, spurring the council to act. At a recent council meeting a number of realtors and community owners argued that rent control would lower the quality of life for the residents because they need the extra money to maintain the communities. City council members will decide at a future meeting the appropriate amount of rent increase. As MHProNews knows, rent control in MHCs in several California cities has been turned back by the courts. ##
