The Las Vegas Review Journal reports that the city with the highest foreclosure rate in the nation – Las Vegas – is supplying Haiti with steel modular homes for the one million who remain homeless following the earthquake last year. Sancta, from the Spanish for sanctuary, shipped its first home today, after being chosen by the Clinton Foundation and the Haitian government as one of the 50 suppliers. The earthquake-resistant homes range from 160 to 640 square feet, and are constructed of lightweight steel panels that two people can assemble in about six hours. Sancta is developing a model of a village community of modular homes, and say these units could be adapted to provide affordable housing in the U.S. as well.
