Islandpacket.com says the small town of Bluffton, South Carolina, just west of Hilton Head, is moving forward with plans to build six modular homes to respond to the area’s affordable housing needs. The town has a $727,000 federal Neighborhood Stabilization Grant plus $150,000 from the Lowcountry Council of Governments. Habitat for Humanity was supposed to contribute the other $350,000, but backed out for fear the town would not meet its May 15 grant deadline. The council said it had applied for an extension, but one resident questioned city officials being in the housing business when the economy is still recovering from a housing crisis. Habitat was going to market the homes, screen applicants and provide guidance on home ownership, a job now fallen to the town council. One resident questioned the council members’ ability to complete the project. Councilman Fred Hamilton said, “We’re moving forward and there’s no stopping us now.”
