Scorched Louisiana Home Likely Misidentified as Manufactured

Channel WAFB in Louisiana ran a story Tuesday titled Flames destroy manufactured home in minutes. We asked an expert, who says visual evidence from the photo suggests this is a pre-HUD Code mobile home, not a manufactured home built to the federal safety standards established by the HUD Code. Thus by definition, the home is most likely not a manufactured home, it’s a mobile home. This story demonstrates why it’s important to get the terms right and use them consistently. It’s also important to continuously educate the media on the proper use of the terms. The story did identify it as a mobile home within the text (and then went on to use the “T” word), but “manufactured home” was used in the headline. As is explained in a recent story at MHMSM.com, manufactured homes are not more prone to fire than site built homes.
