Scottish company ECHO makes modular pods of local lumber under one hundred square feet each that can be stitched together to make the home any size desired, according to fastcoexist.com. Insulated with sheep wool, the homes are built on stilts to allow placement in any terrain. Says founder Sam Booth, “You just add blocks until you get the size you want, and then you take out the internal walls you don’t need. If at a later date you want to add another piece, that’s possible. Any format or layout is possible–a long line, or a group of buildings, or an L-shape, it really doesn’t matter. It’s whatever suits you and suits the site.” While the company has received requests from the U. S., Booth says it’s not worthwhile to send flat-packed homes to the states, but the company is considering a franchise operation in the U. S. that would use wood from nearby areas to make the modular homes.
