Smoke Detectors Do Their Job

fire-monroe-county-michigan-french-townshipA smoke detector alerted residents to a fire about 3:45 p.m. Saturday, February 21, at a home in the Frenchtown Villa Manufactured Home Park, Newport, Michigan.

“I just put new batteries in them last week,” Ray Bijarro said about his smoke detectors as he watched the firefighters work to put out the fire. Both he and his fiancee, April Price, were home at the time and safely escaped. He was not certain Saturday afternoon whether their cat had fled the home or was hiding.

Monroe News tells MHProNews that Frenchtown Township Fire Stations 1 and 2, along with Newport and Estral Beach firefighters, responded to the scene. Frenchtown Township Fire Chief Mark Nicholai said the cause of the fire still is under investigation, but it appears to have started near the furnace, with damage resulting to the floorboards.

The home is repairable, Chief Nicholai said, and the Monroe County Chapter, American Red Cross, was called to assist the couple in the meantime.
