The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) says its 55+ Housing Market Index indicates that the expectation for single-family homes construction remains low. This quarterly report by the NAHB Economics and Housing Policy Group says people who may want to live in a smaller home cannot sell the larger one in which they raised their family. Current sales, expected sales and buyer traffic have all declined since Jan. 2010. However, the report does say the demand for multi-family building is currently outstripping the supply, and if builders continue to face barriers in getting financing to build new units, rents on existing units will likely increase.
