Cost-effective housing today is a growing problem for employers and educational institutions alike.
Google recently announced their plans to turn to modular construction to help ease their employee housing crunch.
Now, Western Dakota Technical Institute (WDTI) is turning to modular building for on-campus living for the first time.
WDTI is the only one of the state’s four technical colleges that doesn’t have on-campus housing, says the Rapid City Journal.
“Affordable housing is a big issue in Rapid City and a big issue for our students,” said Brian Watland, the institute’s vice president for finance and operations.
Milestone Energy Services approached the institute with what amounted to a man-camp proposal, repackaged for student housing. Each completed housing unit has six bedrooms, completely furnished with desks, beds, and cabinetry.
“That’s all the way down to the silverware, the linens and everything else,” Watland told the school board.
Details are yet to be worked out. Milestone Energy Services has provided modular homes to corporations like Halliburton and others in the crude oil industry. ##
