The Raleigh Public Journal reports the tornado that tore through North Carolina April 16 destroyed 63 single-family homes in Raleigh, according to the Raleigh Department of Inspections. Fifty percent more stick built homes than pre-HUD code homes were destroyed. Major damage occurred at 184 dwellings, and 851 suffered minor damage (percentage of stick built to factory built unknown.) Of business properties, one was destroyed, 11 suffered major damage, and 22 received minor damage. Many of the structures were damaged by trees uprooted by the 150 MPH winds. Over a hundred people have been sleeping in shelters at night, and at least 1,500 homes are without power. President Barack Obama has declared parts of the state a disaster area.
