Juneteenth is the newest federal holiday. “Until the widening divisions of the past four years, Juneteenth was an uncontroversial celebration of American freedom and the end of slavery in Texas. Let’s get that back.” So says a subheading from the commentary by Kevin Roberts, Ph.D., in the article from the Daily Signal provided in Part I below to MHProNews. Juneteenth is described by Oxford Languages as: “a holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. A “truth bomb” is defined by Wiktionary as follows: “truth bomb (plural truth bombs) (informal) A blunt, undiplomatic statement of something that is true that others may not want or expect to hear.” Quora frames that term a bit differently: “A Truth Bomb is a colloquial term to describe the statement of some simple fact that exposes a fallacy in a larger narrative or belief.” “A truth bomb is a statement made that might seem shocking to the recipient but is the truth” per Slang. 

In Part II of this report with analysis will be a snapshot that includes additional information about slavery in the world in 1776, in 1861, and modern slavery. For those who think they need a trigger warning, there may be several proverbial truth bombs in both Part I and Part II. By the way, as defined by Merriam Webster: “The meaning of TRIGGER WARNING is a statement cautioning that content (as in a text, video, or class) may be disturbing or upsetting.” But the purpose of a truth bomb is medicinal, meaning, this post can begin a healing process deemed by some as necessary. For the career minded, business owners, ethical investors, or authentic freedom seekers, this could be part of an awakening.

Note that left-leaning Wikipedia says: “Kevin D. Roberts is the president of The Heritage Foundation, a conservative political think tank, and its lobbying arm, Heritage Action. Prior to assuming his current role, he was the CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation in Austin, Texas.” For those who get their news and information primarily from left-leaning sources, Roberts and Heritage represent a thoughtful look at matters from the center-right point of view.

Given that surveys suggest that some 65-70 percent of the country believe the U.S. is on ‘the wrong track’ under the leftist agenda of Joe Biden (D) and his party, it only makes sense to see what the alternative worldview is like. Wikipedia also says: “In October 2021, it was announced that Roberts had been selected to replace Kay Coles James as president of The Heritage Foundation.[6][7]

In September 2023, Roberts was selected as president of Heritage Action, the lobbying arm of The Heritage Foundation, after the executive director, Jessica Anderson, took a leave of absence in July 2023.[8][9] Roberts “serves both organizations in a joint role.”[10]

Per the Heritage Foundation’s bio of Dr. Roberts, he is the “seventh President in the organization’s 50-year history. “Under Roberts’ leadership, TPPF [Texas Public Policy Foundation] more than doubled in size. He also expanded the Texas think tank’s influence nationwide, opening an office in Washington, D.C., so that TPPF research might better inform federal policy debates.”

“A lifelong educator, Roberts earned his PhD in American History from the University of Texas. After several years of teaching history at the collegiate level,” says his Heritage bio, before he shifted to starting a K-12 school in Lafayette, Louisiana, and after other education-focused endeavors, later entered the nonprofit space.

Per Roberts: “Heritage is known throughout the conservative movement and policy community as a solutions factory. As a lifelong, movement conservative, I have always seen Heritage as the beacon of conservatism and of the American dream. In recent years, as I have worked with Heritage scholars on several issues, I came to appreciate Heritage’s critical role at this particular point in history. Coming from a state as free and prosperous as Texas, I’m eager to share the innovative ideas we developed and build on them.”

Roberts was invited by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to address their meeting in Davos, Switzerland earlier this year. He took the opportunity to criticize the group face-to-face for their advocacy of globalism and other policies he believes are harmful to American rights and freedoms.  The WEF, it will be recalled, is the globalist organization that openly pushed a video using their own logo that stated a goal that by 2030 “you will own nothing and be happy.” With homeownership becoming more difficult in the past three years, and with Joe Biden having embraced the WEF adopted slogan of “Build Back Better,” it is fair to wonder if the increased difficult in becoming a homeowner is an accident or a planned feature of the Biden agenda. Since affordable home ownership is obviously a longstanding and vital part of the battle for more affordable housing, it makes sense to explore Roberts’ thinking in the context of the battle for saving and expanding the reach of the American Dream. Roberts, in a video clip from his address at Davos with the WEF logo behind him, tells attendees at that event and those viewing that “the elites” are “part of the problem” and that they tell people “that reality is X when reality is Y.” Roberts might be described as having cajónes. Project 2025 is part of the constellation of efforts Heritage is involved in. His record of leadership makes him and the 5-plus decade young organization he leads as a force to be reckoned with. Don’t Let the Left Ruin Juneteenth’s True Meaning

Until the widening divisions of the past four years, Juneteenth was an uncontroversial celebration of American freedom and the end of slavery in Texas.

This Wednesday, America will celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday for the fourth time. Yet the holiday, born out of bipartisanship, is becoming more divisive each year.

The Left has co-opted Juneteenth to push for radical racial policies such as reparations and exclude most Americans from its celebration. As a result, many conservatives now oppose the federal holiday.

But in the eyes of this Texas historian, it’s a mistake to abandon a unifying national holiday to the manipulations of the Left. We should instead do what conservatives are best at: Get back to the roots.

Until the past four years, Juneteenth was an uncontroversial celebration of American freedom and the end of slavery in Texas. The holiday commemorates the day Union Gen. Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, informing Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the state’s slaves, and marking the end of slavery under the Confederacy.

The next year, in 1866, residents of Galveston began celebrating “Jubilee Day,” which eventually became what we know as Juneteenth. In 1979, Al Edwards, a Democratic state representative from Houston, sponsored legislation to make Juneteenth a paid state holiday. Texas Gov. Bill Clements, a Republican, signed the bill into law, and the holiday was born.

The national acceptance of Juneteenth also began in a bipartisan fashion. President Donald Trump was the first president to call for its adoption as a federal holiday in 2020, although it took a year for Congress to act. When it did, the bill passed the Senate with unanimous consent and 415-14 in the House.

With that kind of history, one would expect conservatives, even those wary of the pitfalls of identity politics like me, to embrace Juneteenth’s consistency with the principles enshrined in our founding documents.

The holiday celebrates what President Abraham Lincoln called “a new birth of freedom” for America. It celebrates the completion of the work of July 4, 1776—the extension of liberty to all Americans. It also commemorates the untold numbers of young men who died in the war fighting for that freedom.

If it’s good enough for Texas, why are some conservatives beginning to oppose the holiday?

Unfortunately, the answer lies mostly on the left.

The Left has worked hard to co-opt the holiday and use it as a tool to divide their countrymen and to replace the real Independence Day. It began on the first federal Juneteenth, when Democratic leaders tied the 156-year-old holiday to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Then, the Left named the national holiday “Juneteenth National Independence Day,” setting it up in opposition to July 4.

What was once a broadly accepted state holiday celebrating a significant moment in Texas history became a pawn in the national game of identity politics and subject to the division of the 24-hour news cycle.

The Guardian published a story calling Juneteenth “the real Independence Day”—a slap in the face to both our Founders and all Americans who celebrate July 4. Activists have called for Juneteenth to be used to explore “racial trauma” and enact reparations.

Under these circumstances, it is no surprise that Americans are souring on Juneteenth. What they hear from the media and elected leaders on Juneteenth is a self-righteous, anti-American drumbeat of criticism and division. Most Americans are excluded from the celebration, as is anyone who believes in America’s founding or doesn’t buy the narrative that America is “systemically racist” today.

But it’s not too late to save the holiday from those who would abuse it. Here’s one way: Celebrate it as the first day of a two-week national celebration of independence and freedom, stretching from June 19 to July 4.

We should remember the wars in which Americans fought and died to defend our shared heritage of liberty and expand it to all Americans. We should commemorate the armies of young patriots—black and white—who fought wars against tyrannical elites, whether it was the English crown or the plantation owner. We should consider how elites today are trying to take away the very freedoms that were secured on June 19 and July 4 through the blood of our forefathers and work with our neighbors to protect our liberties.

That’s the true spirit of Juneteenth. It’s a day of building up our country, not tearing it down. We have an opportunity to reject racial divisions and the revisionist history of the ivory tower.

It’s long past time conservatives start reclaiming our institutions—let’s start this June 19.

Elites in the U.S. and other nations often embrace globalist notions, says Roberts and others, which is part of their agenda. Globalism is not in keeping, argues Roberts and numbers of conservatives, with traditional American independence including individual human rights, like the right to life, liberty, and property. Without those rights to life, liberty, and property being secured, the right to homeownership is tenuous or can even be obliterated.

But it also indicates that essentially the entire populated portion of the world has experienced slavery during various segments of thousands of years of human history. Slavery isn’t some ‘original sin’ in the U.S., as if it never occurred anywhere else.

Along with ending serfdom or slavery in a formal sense, it is wise to understand that the right to private property goes with personal freedom. Economic, religious, political, and personal liberty all go hand-in-hand. Part of the tragedy of our era is that reportedly tens of millions are still de facto slaves in various parts of the world. 5) Dr. Roberts has a point. Slavery has been used as a wedge issue by some on the left to divide and roil American society. Yet, ironically, it was largely the leftist Democratic Party that was the party of slavery. For Democrats and leftists to use past slavery as club against Republicans and conservatives is hypocrisy at its finest. Who says? A Black university professor, Dr. Carol Swain, Ph.D., a professor of political science at Vanderbilt University, who in the Prager U video posted below that on this date has over 9.2 million views shared “the inconvenient history of the Democratic Party.”

6) The conservative movement that Roberts and others represent may not have been as ‘unified’ 10 or 20 years ago as it is today, but there is an argument to be made that it is still not as generally unified as the left in the U.S. tends to be.  Be that as it may, efforts are underway to create more joint efforts to highlight what conservatives say is a better policy agenda for the economic, social, and freedom of the vast majority of Americans under their broad banner than what is experienced under the practical impacts of leftist ideology. Historic understanding is an important part of the process, as even Democratic House Minority Whip James Clyburn (SC-D), a former history professor, has aptly explained.

7) Perhaps due in part to influence from the Heritage Foundation and other groups like it, during the waning days of the Trump presidency, a project was launched to recapture the truths about American history as a way of combatting leftist ideology that has infected American educational institutions. From the 1776 Commision’s report: “Natural equality requires not only the consent of the governed but also the recognition of fundamental human rights—including but not limited to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—as well as the fundamental duty or obligation of all to respect the rights of others. Indeed, the very purpose of government is to secure these rights, which exist independently of government, whether government recognizes them or not. 9) The fundamental importance of the rule of law, and the constitutional limits on governmental power have been explored several times in articles on MHProNews, including those linked below. The ongoing battle between rulers, actual or would-be ‘elites’ and the struggle of the people to get and keep their rights to life, liberty, and property are a subtheme to many issues that face our society. For example. Is housing something provided by the government? While some on the left assert some aspect of that notion, it ignores the reality that government doesn’t create, government takes first before it gives. Because there is an overhead cost to government, not to mention the risk of cronyism and corruption, government is inherently inefficient.  It is thus no surprise that the larger a government becomes, the more freedom tends to be limited and elites benefit at the expense of large groups of the population.
