“US Housing Starts & Building Permits Plunge In September” is the headline from the financial news and views site ZeroHedge, which in turn credits the following graphics to left-leaning Bloomberg. Among the quoted items in Part I will be a correction made by MHProNews for an apparent typo which in the original appears as “permiots inchjed higher” but should have read as “permits inched higher.” These insights into the conventional building market should be considered through the lens of affordable housing, factory-built housing, and obviously including our focus on HUD Code manufactured homes – that will all be unpacked in our analysis in Part II.
“Tyler Durden’s” is the pen name commonly used in the bylines on ZeroHedge, a reference to the character from the hit movie Fight Club. More on that in Part II.

…Housing Starts and Building Permits disappointed in September, declining more than expected (-0.5% MoM and -2.9% MoM respectively)…
Under the hood, multi-family permits plunged 10.8% MoM (and multi-family starts dropped for the second straight month). Single-family starts rose 2.7% MoM and permits inches higher by 0.3% MoM…
Rate-cut expectations appear to have taken the excitement out of the building market…
Housing Completions also dropped (but the BLS thinks construction jobs continue to rise non-stop)…
So, The Fed cuts short-term rates… mortgage-rates rise… and builders slow their building plans… that’s not how it’s supposed to work! ##
Part II – Additional Information with More MHProNews Analysis and Commentary
1) MHProNews reported in 2021 that Marketplace pointed out that builders were throttling construction.
2) The keen eyes at ZeroHedge spotted the oddity that construction jobs are supposedly rising while starts and completions are falling? Recall that the FBI quietly revised crime stats upwards after initially claiming that they were down. In the Biden-Harris era, federal and other agencies have at various times made later revisions that undermined prior rosy reports more troubling. Can’t have “We the People” knowing more accurate data about what is occurring if it hurts the favored party during an election year, can you?

Study: Inflation Undercounted by Half

3) MHProNews periodically notes that HUD’s own researchers Pamela Blumenthal and Regina Gray have said that the causes and solution to the affordable housing crisis are known. But let’s quote prior HUD Secretary Ben Carson, M.D., from his complete comments found in the report linked here.
“I announced that HUD was in position to usher in a “new era of cooperation and collaboration between our Department [i.e.: HUD] and the manufactured housing industry.” Note that Dr. Carson pointedly said that HUD previously was NOT cooperating and collaborating with manufactured housing. Think about that in connection with the evidence-supported allegations made by Minneapolis Federal Reserve senior researcher James A. “Jim” Schmitz Jr. and his colleagues, who claimed that HUD and the NAHB have been engaged in sabotaging monopoly tactics.
4) Also, per Dr. Carson was this.
Affordable Housing
Our nation’s shortage of affordable housing is ultimately an issue of supply and demand. With millions of people in need, high demand is already guaranteed. That’s why HUD has focused our strategy on increasing supply – namely, by promoting initiatives, programs, techniques, and technologies that produce more affordable homes.
Since the key constraint on supply is the cost of new construction and development, the solution to the problem is to change the cost side of the equation.
Manufactured housing has emerged out of the limestone and stepped into the limelight, to address precisely this need.
5) Dr. Carson clearly thought highly of HUD Code manufactured homes, because he didn’t just say nice thinks while in the presence of a manufactured home friendly audience. He also spoke about manufactured housing favorably in entirely distinctive events. A good example is shown quoted below.
6) But who is it that the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) leaders have cozied up to? Democrats that throw manufactured housing a periodic verbal bone while failing to lift a finger to get the Manufactured Housing Improvement Act of 2000 (MHIA) and its so-called “enhanced preemption” provision implemented. Instead of pointing out the problems between HUD and NAHB that Schmitz and Fed researchers have spoken and written about or that Dr. Carson himself alluded to, MHI is busy celebrating their ‘partnership’ with HUD. You simply can’t make this stuff up.
7) But MHI leaders think differently than they may posture or claim. Why didn’t MHI publicly pressing then HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge at the Innovative Housing Showcase (IHS) or other events to implement federal enhanced preemption, which could unless manufactured housing much like statewide ADU preemption in CA and elsewhere has dramatically boosted production?
No, that would be too common sense for MHI leaders to seek and get implemented, right? Instead of taking the straight and direct route, they would rather praise a Democratic housing plan that benefits site builders instead of manufactured housing. Again, you just can’t make this stuff up. The facts, once understood, speak loudly.
8) The latest HUD Code production stats follow.
9) With these facts, evidence, and thoughts in mind, the reports that follow will take on a keen and insightful new meaning. Because MHI staff apparently can’t be bothered to do what NAHB, NAR, the RVIA, or the Manufactured Housing Association for Regulatory Reform (MHARR) does. That would be? Share manufactured housing data with the general public. MHI wants to charge people a membership to get what MHARR offers free to all.
The MHProNews analysis of that data is found in the report linked in #8 above and here. Facts are marvelous things, unless someone is crafting a narrative that seeks to avoid pesky factual realities.
10) For 15 years, MHProNews has sought to inspire industry professionals with facts, evidence, and the sometimes-sobering truth that in this instance needs to agree with notorious MHI member Frank Rolfe, who blamed MHI for the industry’s underperformance. Rolfe also said there is no sincere desire on the part of “special interests” to solve the affordable housing crisis. Did Rolfe start reading MHARR and MHProNews more?
11) Instead of working with MHARR, which MHI did to get the MHIA of 2000 enacted, MHI seems to think it is somehow better to work with conventional housing trade groups. Huh? Aren’t they the natural competitors of HUD Code manufactured housing? Yes, they are. But don’t expect to understand why MHI does what they do unless you have your MHProNews decoder ring. Their logic is simple. They want to foster consolidation.
12) It seems that paltering, posturing, spin, deception and misdirection, doublespeak and doublethink are required notions for any who want to walk in the MHI orbit and pretend to believe them.
13) Peering into the future, Samuel Clemens (a.k.a.: Mark Twain) spotted sources like those linked to MHI and deceptive leftists when he said this.
14) Nowhere else in MHVille trade media and bloggers do you get fact-checks and analysis that pulls back the curtain on third-party claims, other than MHProNews and/or MHLivingNews.
