“Well, what really counts? The industry or the aggrandizement of Mme. Gooch? I’m only surprised at the order of presentation.” So said a remark to MHProNews about the items below from the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and their ongoing campaign to uplift their CEO, Lesli Gooch, Ph.D. “Aggrandizement is the noun form of the verb aggrandize, “to increase the power or reputation of something,” and it usually implies that there’s some exaggeration going on.” So says Vocabulary.
Another message that accompanied an email from MHI included the following.
“Make sure you read all of the Dr. Gooch bio. I bet she doesn’t even know what end the hitch is on.”
In yet another email to MHProNews, when did people stop learning logic?

Another emailed remark about Gooch and her ‘recognition’ by HousingWire: “Now that’s influence, dragging your own industry lower. Amazing.”
The ‘praise’ is apparently another case of you just can’t make this stuff up.
Is this What Illusory Truth, Propaganda, and Gaslighting in MHVille Looks Like in 2023?
HousingWire describes their Women of Influence program for 2023 like this: “The Women of Influence program recognizes the outstanding efforts of women in driving the housing economy forward. The honors are given to individuals who are making notable contributions to both their businesses and to the industry at large — with a specific focus on contributions made in the most recent 12 months. These women’s energy, ideas, achievements, and commitment to excellence and progress give us a look at the future of the industry.”
What, then, is the contribution of Lesli Gooch in the last twelve months that is driving the housing economy forward? Isn’t declining manufactured housing sales – by definition – a retreat or decline instead of ‘forward’ movement?
In a Federated States email from MHI to their state affiliate members on 8.7.2023 was the following.
Manufactured Housing Shipments Increase 3.6% from May, Continue to Lag 2022MHI’s recently released Economic Report includes both shipment and production tallies for June 2023. Cumulative shipments through June totaled 43,893 homes compared with 61,650 homes through the first half of 2022, a net decrease of 28.8%. In June, 8,179 new manufactured homes were shipped, a increase of 281 homes or 3.6% compared to May 2023, and a decrease of 3,193 homes or 28.1% compared to June 2022. Compared with the same month last year, shipments of both single-section and multi-section homes were both down by 28%. As of 2022, manufactured housing accounted for roughly 11.2% of new single-family starts, up from 9.4% in 2021. As of June 2023, manufactured housing accounted for roughly 9.8% of new single-family starts. Read the full June Economic Report.
In this fact, evidence, and analytical expert editorial commentary, we provide evidence that a growing number in MHVille appear to be stirring to the increasingly obvious con game occurring that involves the Arlington, VA based Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI) and its demonstrably compromised by documents provided to MHProNews by an MHI whistleblower about “woman of influence” MHI CEO Gooch.
MHARR’s take on the production issue is found in the weekly headline recap below. MHLivingNews‘ analysis of the MHARR report is also found below.
Day by Day
For a time, some in the MHI orbit in MHVille periodically attempt a defense of some sort of MHI’s actions. For instance, Ohio’s Executive Director characterized the exposes by MHProNews as a “scorched earth” campaign. Ohio’s legal counsel made an odd argument to defend MHI, which when examined, looked sort of like she was tossing them under the proverbial bus. Something similar can be said of MHI affiliated executive director Jim Ayotte’s remarks about the industry not being “rocket science.” Ayotte leads the Florida Manufactured Housing Association (FMHA), one of several states that have been marketing for years, yet the industry in Florida is also well behind where they were in 2022. Florida had 3917 new homes shipped into or within their state in year-to-date in 2023 vs. 4569 during the same 6-month period in 2022. But by showing their thoughts vs. that of others, providing facts and expert analysis for context, MHProNews’ fulfills our multi-year slogan of “We Provide, You Decide.” ©
If the industry’s “not rocket science,” as Ayotte put it, then why has the industry dropped so sharply? What does that say about almost women of excellence CEO Gooch or MHI’s board leadership?
Cavco’s Bill Boor soberly told Congress that the industry is at a crossroads. How that remark and others he made aligns with what he told investors on the most recent earnings call is one of several reports for the week that was below.
Fresh data on manufactured home communities. The push for a de facto national rent control through the ‘back door.’ More facts and analysis on the slide of manufactured housing to lows not seen in years. The odd tales about Lesli Gooch and what it means for industry pros and consumers. Are manufactured home sales a young person’s profession? Comparing MHI’s Gail Cardwell with MHI’s Lesli Gooch, including insights from Ann Burkhart, J.D., on manufactured home financing.

Per the report above linked here: “Even before the declared COVID 19 pandemic, Pew Research revealed in January 2020 that: “70 percent of Americans” believe that the system is rigged. Pew said that those people say the system is rigged believe in “The notion that the U.S. economy is “rigged” to benefit the wealthy.” In the light of those kinds of statistics, wouldn’t it be foolish to blindly trust that Madam Gooch is working for all, when outsiders looking in, as well as industry insiders, have come to the conclusion that the evidence strongly suggests that MHI has been used to rig the industry in the favor of consolidators?
That same linked report, and others, have pointed out that this doesn’t mean that people in MHVille should feel ‘hopeless and helpless.’ There are lawful means to correct what has gone wrong. MHProNews strongly advocates in favor of those lawful means of redress.
If lady Gooch was given 50 awards, vs. the ‘almost’ won a woman of influence award, it would not change the facts. Never forget that for some years, Chimene Van Gundy was praised – with what looked like ‘good’ evidence – for being a woman of influence, a supposedly role model. Since then, charges of fraud involving millions of dollars have emerged.
For years, Enron, WorldCom, Bernie Madoff, and Theranos were thought highly of, uplifted, and praised by people like Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and then VP Joe Biden. Scams have successfully carried on for months and years until events finally caused the scam to unravel and/or finally be recognized for what it was.
Manufactured housing is underperforming during an affordable housing crisis.
