Much of the mainstream media has focused on the approval rating for President Donald J. Trump and his administration since his inauguration in January.
But under reported is the fact that the avalanche of negative media stories seems to have harmed the media’s own ratings.
While Rasmussen reported today that the president has slipped under 40 percent, its only part of the story.
Recent polls by Gallup, Morning Consult, and Marist Poll (NPR/PBS News Hour) all show that a growing majority of American’s don’t trust the media. They also think the media has been largely biased against the president.
According to a recent Gallup poll, only 32 percent of American’s say that they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in the media.
Similarly, the Morning Consult survey found that 28 percent of American’s find that the media “understands the issues everyday American’s are facing.”
The Marist Poll found that around 30 percent of people had “a great deal/good amount” of trust in the media.
Trust Varies by Party
When broken down by party affiliation, the Gallup poll shows that Democrats have the most faith in news media with 51 percent saying they do trust the media. That’s followed by independents at 30 percent, and Republicans at 14 percent.
In the last twenty years the number of people who say they have a “great deal” or “fair amount” of trust in the media has continued to drop. Among the three major groups of Americans, represented by Democrats, GOP or independents – all are now at an all-time low.
