Writing in gazette.com, Bill Radford traces the recent history of manufactured housing as a run up to buying a manufactured home (MH) in a rural area east of Colorado Springs for him and his wife. Noting the industry has come a long way since the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) took over the regulation of their construction, he tells MHProNews.com the quality of MH is as good as any site-built home. He says the expense of a site-built home in a rural setting is high because of the distance from resources. Because of the higher concentration of MH, there are many options in his area, leading to additional savings because of the competition. While driving in the area the couple sometimes makes a game of trying to distinguish manufactured and modular homes from site-built.
They have added hardwood flooring to their multi-section home, replaced the vinyl-covered drywall panels with new panels, and the previous owner had installed a blue steel roof and updated the windows, increasing energy efficiency for their home that was built in 1996 in Fort Worth, Texas. The tag under the kitchen sink also says it is suitable for weather conditions in Colorado. Concludes Radford: “We’re happy with our little house on the prairie. It’s cute, suits our needs and stays cozy even in the worst of winter.” ##
